Amarillo entertainment in brief for the week of May 15 – Amarillo Globe-News

Center City to host downtown tour Sunday, May 15

Center City will host Imagine the Possibilities!, a downtown tour featuring a historic hotel, a movie studio, restaurant, ice rink and residences in historic downtown Amarillo, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15.

For the tour, participants will register in the lobby of The Barfield, purchase a wristband for $5 and receive a list of all the properties participating in the open house. From the list, they can drive or walk to one or all of them. The wristband will serve as an admission ticket.

The tour will begin in the lobby of The Barfield, the historic hotel at Sixth and Polk. The building was built in 1927 by Melissa Dora Oliver-Eakle as one of downtown’s first skyscrapers. Now the building has a new life as a luxury hotel in downtown Amarillo.

“This tour is an opportunity to see behind the scenes of The Barfield and the other great locations. Center City is proud to sponsor the tour along with other Texas Main Street cities,” said Beth Duke, executive director of Center City.

“Center City joined the Texas Main Street program of the Texas Historical Commission in 2022. This year marks our 20th anniversary of Center City’s recognition as a Main Street City. The Imagine the Possibilities tour is one way to celebrate our successes in historic preservation and downtown revitalization,” Duke said.

The Imagine the Possibilities tour is a statewide effort of DowntownTX, a project of the Texas Historical Commission and Texas Main Street. The website DowntownTX.org promotes historical properties in downtowns in Texas cities, according to Duke. In addition, May is National Historic Preservation Month.

With momentum still high following their fourth career #1, multi-platinum Eli Young Bandis releasing an introspective new single with “Break It In” via The Valory Music Co.

Under producer Dann Huff, the tune explores lessons in life and love that are only learned over time well spent. As showcased through vivid Benjy Davis, Brandon Day, Daniel Ross, and Michael Whitworth-penned lyrics, EYB further delivers a booming chorus: “Like these dusty boots that walked me through / The work that got me here / And these faded jeans with Skoal can rings / I’ve worn out all these years / When the shine wears off, when you lose that gloss / There’s so much more underneath it all / You think that good is good as it can get / Then you break it in.”

“Meet Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage,” a news release says. “Pouring her heart into her pies, she crafts desserts that mirror her topsy-turvy life such as ‘The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie’ and ‘Betrayed By My Eggs Pie.’ When a baking contest in a nearby county — and a satisfying encounter with someone new — show Jenna a chance at a fresh start, she must find the courage to seize it. Change is on the menu, as long as Jenna can write her own perfectly personal recipe for happiness.”

Based upon the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly, “Waitress” is the first Broadway musical in history to have four women in the four top creative team spots, with a book by Jessie Nelson, a score by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, choreography by Lorin Latarro and direction by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus.

“Waitress” closes the 2021-2022 Amarillo Broadway Spotlight Series, sponsored by Education Credit Union and KVII ProNews 7.
